Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a form of counseling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine including acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy (TFT). It is best known through Gary Craig's EFT Handbook, published in the late 1990s, and related books and workshops by a variety of teachers. EFT and similar techniques are often discussed under the umbrella term "energy psychology".
Although EFT has only recently been used as a specific technique, it is based upon the traditional Chinese Acupressure points. By tapping on certain meridian points around the head and shoulders we are able to change and modify how we react and respond to everyday situations. EFT is able to help with emotional and physical issues such as anxiety, phobias, habits, and pain as examples.
This technique is gaining wider acceptance and is in fact now recognised and being used by our NHS to help with anxiety and depression. We must realise that there are not millions of pounds to be made out of promoting or advertising this very simple technique, so 'big business' is not keen to put its weight behind it as its somewhat contrary to their need to make money.
